Sewing Projects

Christmas 2017

For Christmas we embroidered thick and luxurious beach towels.   We sent the two towels off to our niece and nephew in Toronto.  They are very young, very cute, and very sweet.   We customized each gift with their name in large fun font.   This fabric has large loops (terry towel ) and presents a challenge with “field coverage”.   For this project we used cheap tear-away on the bottom with an adhesive stabilizer on top.   The top stabilizer flattens the loops providing an excellent surface on which to form the image without adding too much bulk!

My wife Coco starts the thread colour picking process.

We love all elements of embroidery including the preparation.   We’ve found that placing the thread directly over the hooped fabric gives a better feel for the final look.  We are fortunate to have 140 colours to choose from.  You can see in the images our two brief cases which have been modified.  They were made to hold and display our Italian rayon.  The two case were given to us by John, the  husband of one of our clients.  A gifted woodworker and a generous soul.

Here I’m checking the tension of the hooped fabric.

Firm, taught, but not so tight the weave opens.  This attention to detail helps the eventual image lay flat and reduces common problems like “flagging”, thread shearing, etc.

And finally… SHOW TIME!

I love to sit in on a cold day and spend time cooking and sewing with Coco.

Merry Christmas everyone!
